Everything You Should Know About the Benfica Museum

Spread over three floors and more than 4,000 square meters, the Benfica Museum, or the Museu Benfica, is where you’ll find the club’s rich 120-year legacy documented in the form of trophies, documents, and images, among other things. Located right next to the ​Benfica Stadium, it offers the perfect pitstop for anyone looking to learn more about the club’s illustrious history over more than a century.

Where is the Benfica Museum located?

The Benfica Museum is located beside the stunning Benfica Stadium. Also known as the Museu Benfica - Cosme Damião, it was opened to the public in 2013 and is named after one of its key founders, Cosme Damião. He was also the team’s first captain-coach.

Through a mix of virtual and augmented reality, as well as audio and video, you dive deep into the club’s legacy, the trophies it’s won, some of the club’s most prominent players, and key moments in its history. In fact, it was even awarded the prize for the Best Portuguese Museum in 2014 by the Portuguese Association of Museology.

Cosme Damião

Known as the Father of SL Benfica, Cosme Damião was recognized as the main force behind the club’s foundation. The Benfica Museum has an entire section dedicated to him, with plenty of information on his contributions, his tenure as its captain, coach, and manager, and his jersey and boots, among other things. He’s also remembered as one of the first great Portuguese footballers, and you’ll find several little snippets about his contribution to the club’s success

No matter where you go within the museum, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with the many trophies Benfica has won over the years. Some key highlights include the NOS Three-Time Champion League Trophy from 2015/16, the Portuguese Cup, two European Cups, and a few of the 38 Primeira Liga titles it’s won.

The Luisão exhibit

The museum also has an entire exhibit dedicated to Ânderson Luís da Silva, better known as Luisão. He’s recognized as the club’s longest-serving captain and has played with the club for a total of 16 seasons. You’ll find several snippets about his career, including the 599 matches he’s played, 49 goals scored, and the various cups he’s won.

Benfica is more than Portugal’s most decorated football club. Over the years, it has also had various other teams, including athletics, cycling, basketball, and rugby, among others. You’ll find an entire section dedicated to the histories of these departments, along with the most notable trophies they’ve won.

  • Wear comfortable shoes as the museum is large and exploring all the exhibits will involve a lot of walking.
